Sikorsky Looking to Sell Its Single-Engine Line

The Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, announced in March 2015 that they have stopped taking orders for their single engine product line and is considering selling it. Sikorsky is still producing the S-300 and S-333 helicopters at the Coatesville factory in Pennsylvania, but they have terminated the S-434 program due to technical issues. According to a spokeswoman for Sikorsky, the company is

“fulfilling all orders that are under contract but are not taking any new orders at this time.

The S-300 and S-333 will continue to be produced until all the current orders have been filled. Though Sikorsky has tried to provide strong aftermarket support, dissatisfied customers in both North America and Europe complain about a lack of spare parts. Sikorsky, founded in 1925 by Igor Sikorsky, is headquartered in Stratford, Connecticut and employs nearly 16,000 workers. In a March 2015 Fortune magazine article, Sikorsky’s parent company UTC announced their decision to explore spinning off its Sikorsky helicopter unit. CEO Greg Hayes told reporters

“while Sikorsky is a great helicopter company, it probably didn’t fit into the UTC portfolio.

Sikorsky did not match up with the rest of the company on several fronts. Its margins of 10% lagged the target of at least 15% for UTC’s businesses. Sikorsky acquired their single engine business in 2004 and after a review with the Saudi Ministry of Defense, who received the S-434 helicopters, they discontinued the product line. When asked if Sikorsky could sell the business, the spokeswoman said the firm is

“trying to get the economics and supply chain squared away. We had a lot of cleanup to do to make that product line what we wanted it to be, either to retain it or to have a viable product line for someone who might want to be in that business.

However, nothing is set in stone yet and Sikorsky will continue to “evaluate all options.” Via our proprietary website ASAP AOG services, ASAP Semiconductor is a leading supplier of UTC and Sikorsky products.
