Qatar Airways has ordered 10 Boeing 777-8X jetliners at the Paris Air Show, increasing the total orders for the 777X family to a number of 60. In addition, Qatar Airways will also be ordering four 777F freighters. The 14 total firm contracts are worth a total of $4.8 billion.
The Boeing 777X is a new series of the Boeing 777 family that is currently under development. The 777X will have two variants-the 777-8X and the 777-9X. This new family of aircraft will feature new engines, new composite wings, and technologies from the Boeing 787. The aircraft family is intended to be a direct competitor with the Airbus A350.
The 777-8X will feature a seating for about 350 passengers in a three-class configuration, a length that is between the 777-200ER and 777-300ER, and will have a range of 9,300 nmi (17,200 km) or more. The 777-8X is designed to replace the -200LR and serve as a direct competitor to the Airbus A350-1000. This aircraft variant will have its internal cabin width increased to 19 ft 7 in (5.97 m) from the original 19 ft 3 in (5.87 m) width of previous 777 models. The increase in size allows for 10 abreast economy seating with 18.0 in (46 cm) wide seats.
